Licensing

Last updated 15 October 2026

We publish the main terms of the Bowlio licence so that clubs know who owns Bowlio, who provides it, and what happens to their service and data if the arrangement changes.

In short

  • Bowlio was created by, and is owned by, Nicky Thomas.
  • Nicky Thomas licenses Bowlio exclusively to AIO Digital Ltd for a minimum of 5 years.
  • AIO Digital Ltd runs the Bowlio service, holds the contract with your club and is responsible for protecting your club's data.
  • Bowlio is a trading name of AIO Digital Ltd. It is not a separate company.

The parties

  • Licensor: Nicky Thomas, the owner of Bowlio.
  • Licensee: AIO Digital Ltd, registered in England and Wales, company number 17498689, registered office Y Gorlan, 87 Roger Street, Swansea, SA5 9AR.

Nicky Thomas is also the sole director of AIO Digital Ltd, so this licence is an agreement between the company and its own director. We declare that interest here.

What is licensed

  • The Bowlio software, including its source code and database design.
  • The Bowlio name, logo and brand.
  • Content written for Bowlio, such as help guides and templates.

The licence does not cover your club's data. Your club owns its data and is the data controller for its members' details; AIO Digital Ltd processes that data for your club as its data processor. Third-party software and services used to run Bowlio stay under their own terms.

Main terms

  • Exclusive. While the licence runs, the owner will not license, sell or operate Bowlio for anyone other than AIO Digital Ltd, and will not use it to run a competing service.
  • Term. A minimum of 5 years, which neither side can end early for convenience. After that it continues year by year unless either side gives 12 months' written notice.
  • Ownership. The licence does not transfer ownership of Bowlio. Improvements that AIO Digital Ltd makes or pays for belong to it while the licence runs, and become part of the Bowlio software owned by the owner when the licence ends.
  • Payment. The licence is paid by royalty only. A royalty is payable only out of Bowlio's net profit, after Bowlio's running costs and the owner's start-up costs have been repaid. Nothing is payable before then.
  • When the licence has ended. Once the licence has ended, the owner may license or sell Bowlio to another organisation, subject to the protections for clubs below.
  • Ending for cause. Either side may end the licence early only for a serious breach that is not put right, or insolvency. The protections for clubs still apply so far as possible.
  • Law. The licence is governed by the law of England and Wales.

What this means for your club

  • Your contract is with AIO Digital Ltd, which is responsible for the service you receive and for meeting its data protection obligations to you.
  • The owner has no right under the licence to use your club's data. Any access needed to develop or support Bowlio happens only on AIO Digital Ltd's instructions and under the same safeguards as the rest of the service.
  • If the licence ends, or Bowlio moves to another organisation, there is a 12-month run-off period. During it, AIO Digital Ltd keeps providing Bowlio to existing clubs on their current terms.
  • Before any move, we will tell your club in advance. Your club can choose to export its data instead of having it transferred, and any transfer will follow UK GDPR.
